Drug Testing Your Teens

Teenagers are most vulnerable to drug abuse. They may catch the addiction from school and friends and their parents usually remain unaware of it till the symptoms start showing in the form of behavioral changes or medical complications. But by then, the child becomes a slave to the addiction and it becomes too difficult to take him or her out of the habit. This is the reason why parents should detect the practice in children early and take quick action on it. Teenagers should be tested for drug abuse by their parents. There are some kits available in the market to detect drug abuse in teenagers. These kits test for the presence of a number of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco abuse.

Teenagers can be pretty rebellious when tested for drug dependency. They can become hostile toward you for suspecting them. But you should let them know that you want to test them so that they know that you are concerned about their health and will be very strict in putting them off the habit. But you should be very tactful in conducting the tests. You cannot expect your teenager to cooperate much with you for getting the tests done. So, you’ve got to conduct the test at random. You should tell them that you will be testing them for drugs but you should never let him or her know exactly when you would be testing. Teenagers are very smart and they can easily outwit you into believing that they are drug-free when in reality they are doing drugs.

Don’t let your child know well in advance the date and time of your testing. If you want to test your child in the next twenty four hours do not let him or her know about it, because he can very well indulge in the habit this evening or night and urinate the substance out by tomorrow just before you test. Some children do drugs immediately after the test knowing that their parents will not test them for some more days. In such conditions it is always better to give them about fifteen minutes to half an hour time before testing. Another method is to notify them and keep an eye on them for any deceptive activities. In this way, they will not get a chance to fool you. You can test the child at frequent and irregular intervals. But this also does not ensure a foolproof way of testing the child, because he or she can still have some way to mislead you.

If the teenager says that he or she cannot urinate at a particular point of time, do not try to manipulate by making him/her drink large quantities of water, as this will alter the results. A good way in which you can ensure that your child is not duping you is by checking the temperature of the urine. It should be the same as the body temperature. Cold urine indicates that it has not been taken at the time of the test.

The best way to test you children will be to fully convince him or her that you care for them, and all this is done because you wish them to lead a normal, healthy, and happy life.
